Barstow man shot, killed by police after vehicle chase

A 48-year-old Barstow man who authorities say pointed a gun at officers was shot and killed Monday by one of the officers, Barstow police said.

The man’s name was not released.

The shooting occurred about 5 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of East Fredricks Street after a short pursuit through residential Barstow neighborhoods, according to a Barstow police news release.

The incident began about 4:45 p.m. when officers were searching for a suspect wanted for a probation violation, according to the release. They found the man in the 300 block of Palm Avenue, but as investigators approached his vehicle, the suspect fled.

Authorities say the suspect sped through several stop signs and red lights before turning onto Fredricks Street, where he drove onto a front yard, crashed into a chain link fence and hit part of a home’s garage.

He ran toward the front door, but then turned toward officers with a handgun, the release said. One officer fired a single shot, striking the suspect.

Officers attempted to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the suspect before paramedics arrived, the release said. Paramedics treated the suspect before he died at the scene.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting, the release said.
