Smoke, evacuations from Holy fire prompt some Riverside County schools to close Thursday

Some schools in Riverside County will be closed Thursday because of evacuations or concerns over poor air quality caused by smoke and ash from the Holy fire.

Schools in the Perris Union High School District, the Menifee Unified School District and the Romoland School District will be closed.

The Lake Elsinore Unified School District cited the evacuations in closing Luiseño School, Rice Canyon Elementary, Terra Cotta Middle School and Withrow Elementary until further notice.

A statement from the Menifee District advises students and all but a few district-essential personnel to stay home on Thursday.

Smoke, ash and other airborne contaminants that result from wildfires can irritate the cardiovascular system of nearby residents and exacerbate respiratory health conditions. Young children, the elderly and those already suffering from breathing problems are especially at risk.
